Sacramento, California – Gusty winds and dry air will combine to heighten fire danger across Northern California through Saturday, with peak wind gusts reaching 30 to 33 mph in Red Bluff, Chico, and Vacaville.

According to the National Weather Service in Sacramento, periods of low humidity paired with breezy afternoon winds from May 25 to May 31 are creating critical fire weather conditions. Red Bluff is expected to see gusts up to 33 mph Sunday, while Chico and Vacaville could experience winds near 30 mph again by midweek.

Cities including Marysville, Redding, and Modesto will also see wind gusts in the 24–28 mph range for several days. The dry and windy conditions increase the risk of grass or brush fires, especially in areas with recent vegetation growth. Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, keep vehicles off dry grass, and refrain from using power tools that may create sparks.

Fire weather safety is crucial this week, particularly in rural areas and near open fields. Stay alert for any new red flag warnings and follow updates at weather.gov/sto.

Conditions remain volatile through Saturday evening, and further advisories may be issued if humidity levels drop further or winds increase.
