Sacramento, California – Dry winds and dropping humidity are elevating fire weather risks across the Northern Sacramento Valley Thursday and Friday, raising concern for easier wildfire starts and rapid spread in the region.

According to the US National Weather Service in Sacramento, north winds will intensify late this week, reaching sustained speeds of 10–15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. Minimum daytime humidity could fall to just 15–20 percent, creating a minor but notable threat for fire ignition and rapid growth, especially in open fields and grasslands.

Communities from Red Bluff to Chico are urged to avoid outdoor burning, keep vehicles off dry grass, and dispose of cigarettes and matches properly. Area agencies remind residents that even small sparks can trigger fires in these conditions, particularly near roadsides or rural properties. Motorists along Interstate 5 and Highway 99 should be especially cautious.

This round of elevated fire weather arrives just as the summer dry season intensifies, echoing similar July warnings from recent years. Residents are advised to clear brush around homes, have evacuation plans ready, and monitor updates from local officials.

Fire weather conditions are expected to ease by Saturday, but the National Weather Service warns that similar advisories may follow if dry, breezy weather persists.
