Hanford, Calif. – Dangerously dry conditions are developing across Central California, with fire officials warning of an elevated risk for grass fires through early next week as humidity drops below 20% and gusty winds persist.
According to the National Weather Service Hanford office, the combination of low relative humidity, dry fuels, and breezy conditions could support fire starts from Saturday through Monday, especially in the San Joaquin Valley and surrounding foothills. While the overall risk is minor, conditions are favorable for rapid fire spread if a spark occurs.
Tulare, Kings, Kern, and Fresno counties are particularly vulnerable due to parched grasses and ongoing drought. Even routine activities like mowing dry lawns or towing trailers can ignite fires when sparks meet dry brush. Authorities urge residents to avoid using lawn equipment during the hottest parts of the day and ensure no dragging chains or hot vehicle parts come in contact with roadside vegetation.
This warning follows a period of warming temperatures and persistent dryness, which have accelerated fuel drying across the region. While not under a Red Flag Warning, fire potential is notably higher than average for mid-May.
Officials advise staying alert and limiting ignition sources. Conditions are expected to improve midweek, but further updates may follow if winds intensify.
