Los Angeles, CA – A late-night fire at the Museum of Jurassic Technology in Palms was swiftly contained thanks to the quick actions of a nearby caretaker and rapid response from Los Angeles Fire Department crews.

According to a statement shared Tuesday by the Los Angeles Fire Department, the fire broke out late Monday night, July 8, 2025, near a first-floor entrance of the museum. A smoke alarm alerted the museum’s caretaker, who lives in a nearby building. The caretaker reportedly used two handheld fire extinguishers to control the flames before firefighters arrived on the scene.

Crews confirmed that the fire had not caused any injuries and had not spread to the building’s interior or endangered its collection. The museum, once dubbed “Los Angeles’ strangest museum” by Smithsonian Magazine, is known for its eclectic and often surreal exhibits.

Fire officials praised the caretaker’s prompt action, which they said likely prevented a more serious emergency. Images released by the department show multiple firefighters outside the building, assessing the situation and ensuring the museum’s structure was secure.

No cause for the fire has been officially determined, and an investigation is ongoing.

The Museum of Jurassic Technology remains closed temporarily for safety inspections but is expected to reopen later this week.
