Eureka, CA – Northern California beachgoers face a serious safety concern today as dangerous sneaker waves and strong surf continue along the coast. The National Weather Service warns that conditions will remain hazardous through Thursday afternoon, creating risks for anyone visiting the shoreline.

According to the National Weather Service Eureka office, waves up to 12 feet are possible. These powerful swells can surge unexpectedly, sweeping people off beaches, jetties, or rocks. Officials urge residents and visitors to stay well back from the surf, avoid slippery rocks, and never turn their back on the ocean.

The Beach Hazard Statement is in effect for Del Norte and Humboldt counties, including popular stretches near Eureka and Arcata. Drivers using U.S. Highway 101 through the North Coast should use caution if stopping near coastal viewpoints, where conditions may appear deceptively calm.

Looking ahead, weather clears by Friday with drier skies. Forecasts show mostly sunny conditions Friday through early next week, offering fall-like days in the low 60s and crisp nights in the upper 40s to low 50s. These calmer conditions may provide better opportunities for outdoor activities and Halloween decorating as October begins.
