Gilroy, CA – A magnitude 3.6 earthquake struck 9 kilometers east of Gilroy early Wednesday, briefly rattling parts of the Bay Area including San Jose and Morgan Hill, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake hit at 6:20 a.m. local time (14:20 UTC) at a shallow depth of 3.9 kilometers. According to the USGS, over 200 residents submitted “Did You Feel It?” reports within the first few hours, indicating light shaking but no damage. The tremor was strong enough to be felt in Santa Clara County and across parts of Central California.

No damage or injuries have been reported as of Wednesday morning, but residents described a quick jolt lasting only a few seconds. Emergency officials did not issue alerts or warnings but reminded the public that smaller quakes can sometimes precede larger seismic activity.

Drivers on U.S. Route 101 and Highway 152 in the Gilroy area should remain cautious, though no disruptions have been confirmed. Experts recommend reviewing earthquake preparedness plans and securing heavy furniture in homes, especially near known fault zones.

Seismic activity remains under review, and further updates from the USGS may follow if aftershocks occur.
