Ludlow, California – A shallow magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck north of the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center within minutes Friday afternoon, sending brief shaking across key stretches of Interstate 40 in the Mojave Desert.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake hit at 3:13 p.m. PDT about 26 kilometers west-northwest of Ludlow at a depth of just 1.4 kilometers, amplifying surface shaking across remote desert terrain. The event registered a peak community intensity of IV, meaning light shaking was widely felt but damage remains unlikely.

Drivers along I-40 near Ludlow and toward Barstow may have noticed sudden vibration, especially on overpasses and exposed desert highways. The tremor also reached areas near Fort Irwin and the Marine Corps base at Twentynine Palms, where personnel could feel brief rolling motion.

No road closures or structural damage have been reported, but officials urge drivers to remain alert for debris or sudden stops along high-speed corridors. In desert regions, even minor quakes can shift loose rock near road cuts.

USGS data indicates a 31% chance of additional minor aftershocks in the coming days, though stronger activity remains unlikely. Officials continue monitoring the sequence, and updates could follow if conditions change.
