Berkeley, CA – Thousands of Bay Area residents reported feeling shaking early Monday after a magnitude 4.3 earthquake struck just southeast of Berkeley.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quake hit at 2:56 a.m. PDT on Sept. 22 with a depth of about 7.8 kilometers. The epicenter was located 2 kilometers east-southeast of Berkeley, roughly 10 miles northeast of San Francisco and 70 miles southwest of Sacramento.

The National Tsunami Warning Center confirmed there is no tsunami danger from this event.

As of Monday morning, more than 8,500 people submitted “Did You Feel It?” reports to the USGS, describing light to moderate shaking across the East Bay, San Francisco, and parts of Marin and Contra Costa counties.

The USGS “PAGER” system rated the potential for damage and casualties as green, meaning a low likelihood of significant impact. Forecasts show about a 6% chance of an aftershock of magnitude 4.0 or higher in the next week.

Emergency officials reminded residents that even moderate quakes can serve as an important preparedness reminder for the Bay Area, which sits on several major fault lines including the Hayward Fault.

No major injuries or damages have been reported as of publication time.
