Santa Maria, Calif. – Gale-force winds and rough seas are battering the Central California coast tonight, making conditions hazardous for mariners from Point Piedras Blancas to Point Sal. The National Weather Service issued a Gale Warning that will remain in effect until 8 a.m. Friday.
According to the Weather Service office in Los Angeles, northwest winds are reaching 15 to 25 knots with gusts up to 35 knots, accompanied by seas building to 7 to 9 feet. The warning area extends 10 to 60 nautical miles offshore, where the strongest winds and largest waves are expected overnight.
These conditions could capsize or severely damage small and even larger vessels. Authorities are urging boaters to remain in port or seek safe harbor. Mariners already offshore should alter course and secure their vessels against the possibility of sudden squalls.
The stretch of coast from Morro Bay to Point Sal is most vulnerable, where charter operators, fishing boats, and cargo traffic may see the brunt of the impacts. Travel across the Santa Maria Basin will also be treacherous through early Friday.
The Gale Warning expires Friday morning, though choppy seas may linger into the weekend. Additional advisories could be issued if winds remain elevated.
