Eureka, Calif. – A slow-moving storm system could soak Northern California with several inches of rain from late Sunday into Wednesday, raising concerns about runoff and localized flooding.

According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, rainfall amounts will vary widely depending on how the system tracks, with between 1 and 3 inches possible over the 72-hour period. Forecasters say there’s a 75% chance most locations will see at least an inch of rain, with a 25% chance totals could push well above 2 inches.

The heaviest rain is expected along the coast and in higher terrain across Humboldt, Del Norte, and Trinity counties, where runoff into streams and rivers could lead to minor flooding. Travel may be slowed on U.S. Highway 101 and rural roads where water can quickly pool. The agency warned residents to clear storm drains and monitor river levels closely.

Communities from Crescent City to Eureka should prepare for periods of heavy rain, especially Monday and Tuesday, when downpours are most likely. While the exact track of the low remains uncertain, officials caution that higher-end rainfall would cause more widespread impacts.

Showers are likely to taper by midweek, but additional advisories may be issued if the system intensifies.
