Eureka, Calif. – Mariners along the Northern California coast are facing life-threatening conditions through Monday morning, as 55 mph wind gusts and towering 25-foot seas churn offshore from Point St. George to Point Arena.

According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, a Storm Warning will be in effect from Sunday at 9 a.m. to 9 a.m. Monday for waters between 10 to 60 nautical miles offshore. Ahead of that, gale-force winds of 35 to 45 knots will begin Saturday afternoon, with waves quickly building from 12 feet to over 20 feet overnight.

The most dangerous conditions are expected late Sunday into early Monday, particularly off Cape Mendocino, where sustained northerly winds will top 40 knots. Visibility could also be sharply reduced in breaking sea spray and rough surf.

Boaters and commercial vessels are strongly urged to stay in port or secure their craft. Even experienced mariners could face capsizing risks due to steep wave angles and wind-driven chop. Coastal rescue services may have delayed response times due to the storm strength.

Winds and seas are expected to ease by late Monday, but further advisories may be issued depending on system movement. Mariners should monitor NOAA marine radio and online bulletins for updates.
