According to the National Weather Service, tsunamis are fast-moving ocean waves triggered by earthquakes, landslides, or volcanic activity, capable of traveling at jet-like speeds and rapidly flooding low-lying coastal areas. Officials stress that even a small delay in evacuation can put lives at risk due to strong currents and sudden water surges.
Communities from Southern California through Oregon and Washington face ongoing exposure, especially in beach towns, harbors, and bays where water can funnel inland. Areas like Santa Monica, Long Beach, and San Diego include designated tsunami zones, with marked evacuation routes leading to higher ground. Ports and marinas are particularly vulnerable, where surging water can destroy boats and infrastructure.
Emergency managers urge residents to identify safe zones at least 100 feet above sea level or one mile inland.
