Northern California, CA – A powerful atmospheric river is bringing heavy rain, snowfall, and strong winds to the Pacific Northwest. Officials warn of life-threatening flooding in northern California and southwest Oregon, with rainfall totals reaching 12 to 16 inches.
According to the NOAA Weather Prediction Center, the storm will peak today and continue through Friday. Intense rainfall could trigger dangerous flash floods, rockslides, and debris flows in vulnerable areas. Residents are urged to avoid travel in impacted regions.
Heavy snowfall is expected in higher elevations, particularly above 7,500 feet in the Sierra Nevada. Additional snow could disrupt travel and increase avalanche risks through Saturday. Snow levels are expected to rise quickly, further complicating conditions.
Strong winds will affect southern Oregon and parts of northern California, with gusts reaching up to 80 mph. These winds may topple trees and power lines, causing additional power outages. Forecasters urge residents to prepare for dangerous conditions and stay updated on emergency alerts.
The atmospheric river’s impacts will persist through the weekend, making it one of the region’s most severe weather events this season.
