Petrolia, CA – The Northern California coastline remains seismically active days after a powerful 7.0 earthquake struck offshore near Cape Mendocino. On Saturday alone, 18 aftershocks were recorded in the region, with seismic activity continuing to keep residents alert.

Thursday’s earthquake triggered a tsunami warning along portions of California and Oregon’s coast, prompting brief evacuations before the warning was canceled. While no tsunami materialized, the seismic activity has persisted, with aftershocks averaging one per hour since the main event.

Saturday’s largest aftershock registered at 3.8 magnitude, occurring 56 kilometers west-northwest of Petrolia at a shallow depth of 0.4 kilometers. Smaller tremors, including a 3.0 magnitude quake, have also been reported across the area.

Experts classify these events as aftershocks tied to the original 7.0 quake. These smaller tremors are part of the tectonic plates’ adjustment process near the Mendocino Triple Junction, a zone where three plates meet and generate frequent seismic activity.

Seismologists note the region remains volatile, with ongoing aftershocks likely in the coming days. Officials encourage residents to remain prepared and review emergency plans for future earthquakes or tsunami warnings.
