Coachella, CA – The South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) has extended an air quality alert for the Coachella Valley and Banning Pass due to elevated levels of particle pollution from windblown dust. The advisory remains in effect until noon on Tuesday.
According to the South Coast AQMD, the highest levels of PM10 pollution are expected in the western Coachella Valley, particularly near Cathedral City. Officials warn that particle pollution can penetrate deep into the lungs, potentially triggering asthma attacks and exacerbating heart and lung conditions. Sensitive groups, including children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and those with preexisting health conditions, face the greatest risk.
Residents are urged to monitor the Air Quality Index (AQI) and take necessary precautions. When AQI levels reach “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” (orange), those at risk should limit prolonged outdoor activity. If conditions worsen to “Unhealthy” (red), all individuals may experience health effects, with vulnerable populations advised to stay indoors. In “Very Unhealthy” (purple) conditions, sensitive groups should avoid outdoor activity entirely, while the general public should limit exposure. A “Hazardous” (maroon) reading necessitates that everyone avoid outdoor physical activity.
To improve indoor air quality, residents should keep windows and doors closed, use air purifiers, and avoid activities that generate additional indoor pollution. Authorities also recommend minimizing dust pollution by carpooling, telecommuting, and reducing vehicle trips.
