Palm Springs, California – Unhealthy levels of dust-driven particle pollution continue to grip the Coachella Valley, prompting an air quality alert through 8 a.m. Tuesday.

According to the South Coast Air Quality Management District, windblown dust is pushing harmful particulate levels into the “unhealthy” range across Indio, Palm Springs, Cathedral City, and surrounding communities. Those with heart or lung conditions, children, older adults, and outdoor workers face the highest risks.

Air quality can fluctuate throughout the day, but conditions are expected to remain poor, especially in exposed areas like San Gorgonio Pass near Banning. Residents are urged to stay indoors with windows closed and use air conditioning or air purifiers if available. Outdoor physical activity should be limited, especially when AQI levels reach red or purple zones.

Drivers are also asked to reduce trips and slow down on unpaved roads to avoid stirring up additional dust. Local agencies advise against using swamp coolers, burning candles, or operating gas-powered equipment during the alert.

This is the second major dust-related alert for the region this month. Further advisories may be issued if conditions worsen.
