Palm Springs, California – Residents across the Coachella Valley are facing dangerous air quality through Friday morning as windblown dust drives particle pollution to harmful levels.

According to the South Coast Air Quality Management District, an Air Quality Alert is in effect from 4 p.m. Wednesday until 6 a.m. Friday, covering cities including Indio, Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Palm Desert, La Quinta, and Coachella. The alert warns that fine particulate matter in the air can pose serious health risks—especially for those with asthma, heart or lung disease, children, pregnant individuals, and people who work outdoors.

The AQMD recommends that when air quality reaches “Unhealthy” (red) levels, all residents limit time outside, and sensitive groups should avoid it entirely. When levels rise to “Very Unhealthy” (purple), even brief outdoor activity may pose a risk. Residents are urged to monitor the Air Quality Index online or via the South Coast AQMD mobile app.

To reduce exposure indoors, keep windows closed, use air purifiers or air conditioning, and avoid indoor pollutants like candles, fireplaces, and gas-powered tools.

The alert remains in effect through early Friday, and additional warnings may be issued if conditions worsen.
