Palm Springs, Calif. – Residents in the Coachella Valley are being urged to stay indoors Friday afternoon through Saturday morning as windblown dust pushes air quality to unhealthy levels.

According to the South Coast Air Quality Management District, an air quality alert is in effect from 2 p.m. Friday until 8 a.m. Saturday. Particle pollution—small enough to lodge deep in the lungs—is expected to spike due to high winds in the region, particularly near Indio, Palm Springs, Cathedral City, and La Quinta.

Health officials warn that everyone may experience symptoms when air quality hits “Unhealthy” on the Air Quality Index. Vulnerable groups—including children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and those with asthma or heart and lung conditions—are at greater risk and should avoid prolonged outdoor activity.

To reduce exposure, residents are advised to keep windows shut, run air purifiers or air conditioning, and avoid burning candles, grilling, or using gasoline-powered yard tools. Avoiding unnecessary driving on dirt roads and stabilizing loose soil can help curb dust pollution.

The alert may be extended if conditions worsen. Visit aqmd.gov for real-time updates.
