Palm Springs, CA – A wind-driven air quality alert has been issued across the Coachella Valley, warning residents of elevated particle pollution levels from blowing dust that may pose serious health risks through late Thursday morning.

According to the South Coast Air Quality Management District, the alert is in effect from 8 a.m. Wednesday until 11 a.m. Thursday. The impacted region includes Indio, Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Palm Desert, La Quinta, and surrounding communities near the San Gorgonio Pass.

Health officials advise that particle pollution — tiny dust particles that can penetrate deep into the lungs — may trigger asthma attacks, heart issues, and increase the risk of lung infections. Sensitive groups such as seniors, children, pregnant individuals, and those with heart or lung conditions are most vulnerable.

Residents are encouraged to monitor the Air Quality Index (AQI) and take precautions based on conditions. On days when the AQI reaches “Unhealthy” or worse, residents should avoid prolonged or strenuous outdoor activity. Those in affected areas should also keep windows closed, use air purifiers, and avoid burning candles or grilling indoors.
