Calhoun County, MI – A potentially deadly situation on I-69 early Wednesday morning was averted after Calhoun County Sheriff’s Deputies safely stopped a wrong-way driver who was later found to be suffering from a medical emergency.
According to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched around 2:00 a.m. on November 12, 2025, following multiple reports of a vehicle traveling north in the southbound lanes of I-69 near I-94. Deputies quickly located the vehicle near mile marker 40 and attempted to initiate a stop.
After several unsuccessful attempts, officers deployed stop sticks three times, deflating all four tires and reducing the vehicle’s speed to about 15 mph. Deputies then maneuvered in front of the vehicle and brought it to a controlled stop near mile marker 53 in Eaton County.
Upon contact, deputies determined the 76-year-old driver was experiencing a medical emergency and had become disoriented. The individual was transported to Sparrow Hospital for treatment.
The operation involved assistance from the Calhoun County Consolidated Dispatch Authority, Michigan State Police, and the Charlotte Police Department. Officials say the case remains under investigation.
