Newton Township, MI – More than 60 dogs were rescued from a Newton Township home this week after deputies discovered what they described as “unsanitary and hazardous” conditions inside the residence, according to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to the 8000 block of 8½ Mile Road around 11:23 a.m. Tuesday, October 21, following a report of possible animal neglect. Inside the home, authorities said they found significant amounts of animal waste, a strong odor of urine, and numerous animals in poor health. A deceased dog was also discovered in the backyard.
In total, approximately 68 dogs were removed from the single-story home. The 68-year-old homeowner voluntarily surrendered the animals, which were taken to the Calhoun County Animal Shelter for medical care and evaluation.
Adult Protective Services was also contacted to ensure the wellbeing of the homeowner. The operation was supported by the Battle Creek Police Department, Newton Township Fire Department, and Calhoun County Consolidated Dispatch Authority.
The case remains under investigation, and prosecutors are reviewing potential felony animal abuse and torture charges. Officials are encouraging residents interested in adopting one of the rescued animals to contact the Calhoun County Animal Shelter.
