Barboursville, WV – The Cabell County and Wayne County law enforcement communities are mourning the loss of Robert Michael “Bob” Copley, 72, of Huntington, who passed away peacefully on October 29, 2025, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
According to his obituary from Wallace Funeral Home, Copley dedicated nearly five decades to public safety, beginning his career with Cabell County EMS in 1974 before joining the Cabell County Sheriff’s Department in 1976. Over the years, he served in multiple divisions, including Road Patrol, Investigations, and the Drug Unit. He retired in 2010 as a Lieutenant, but continued to serve another 15 years between the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department and the Cabell County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
Known among colleagues as humble and steadfast, Copley earned a reputation as a respected mentor and leader. Friends and family described him as a devoted husband, father, and “Papaw,” who loved supporting local youth sports and staying active in his community.
Visitation will be held Saturday, November 1, from 5–8 p.m., with funeral services scheduled for Sunday, November 2, at 2 p.m., both at Wallace Funeral Home in Barboursville. Interment will follow at Lynch Cemetery in Fort Gay.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House of Huntington in his memory.
