Cabazon, CA – A small but noticeable earthquake rippled through parts of Riverside County on Wednesday afternoon, briefly shaking homes and businesses near Cabazon and surrounding desert communities.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the magnitude 3.0 earthquake struck about nine kilometers north of Cabazon at a depth of roughly 14.6 kilometers. The quake occurred just after midday local time and was automatically reviewed by seismic monitoring systems. Early community reports suggest light shaking in nearby areas, with no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The epicenter sits near the northern edge of the Coachella Valley, an area accustomed to frequent seismic activity due to several active fault systems. Residents in Cabazon, Banning, Desert Hot Springs, and parts of the western Inland Empire may have felt a quick jolt or brief rumble, especially in upper floors or quieter indoor settings.
Emergency officials did not issue alerts or advisories, and critical infrastructure such as highways, rail lines, and utilities remained unaffected. Even so, residents are encouraged to take moments like this to review earthquake safety plans, secure heavy furniture, and keep emergency kits stocked with water, flashlights, and charged devices.
USGS scientists will continue monitoring for aftershocks, though events of this size rarely lead to stronger follow-up activity. Additional updates will be shared if conditions change.
