Butte, Montana – A strong fall storm will bring an early taste of winter to southwest Montana this weekend, with several inches of snow possible across higher elevations and mountain passes through Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Missoula, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Saturday evening through Monday morning for elevations above 5,000 feet in the Butte and Blackfoot Region. Snowfall totals of 2 to 6 inches are possible around MacDonald Pass, Homestake Pass, Butte, and Georgetown Lake.
The system will move in Saturday night, with snow intensifying into Sunday as colder air deepens across the region. “Travelers should prepare for slick and snow-covered roads, especially on the passes,” forecasters said. The storm could also impact the Monday morning commute, with icy conditions expected to linger.
According to the Montana Department of Transportation, motorists should anticipate reduced visibility, snow-packed stretches, and potential travel delays on I-15 and I-90. Drivers are urged to slow down, carry emergency supplies, and monitor road cameras before setting out.
Temperatures will tumble into the 20s and 30s by Sunday night, allowing snow and ice to persist into early next week. Hunters, hikers, and outdoor workers should prepare for rapidly changing conditions, dress in layers, and protect exposed gear from freezing.
This marks one of the season’s first significant winter systems for the Butte area, signaling a sharp shift toward colder, more unsettled fall weather.
