Burlington, Vermont – After a brief midweek warmup, dangerous Arctic cold is set to surge back into Vermont this weekend, bringing life-threatening wind chills and renewed concerns for frostbite and hypothermia, especially from Saturday into early Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, temperatures will plunge as another blast of cold air settles over the region. Wind chills as low as 20 to 35 degrees below zero are likely, with the harshest conditions expected overnight Saturday and during the early morning hours Sunday. Even short periods outdoors could become dangerous without proper protection.
The cold will impact the entire state, including the Champlain Valley, Northeast Kingdom, and higher elevations of the Green Mountains, where wind chills may be even more severe. Cities such as Burlington, Montpelier, St. Johnsbury, and Rutland could all see dangerously low apparent temperatures as brisk winds combine with subzero air.
Officials urge residents to dress in multiple layers, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors when possible. Pet owners should bring animals inside, and those using alternative heating sources should ensure proper ventilation to avoid carbon monoxide risks. Checking on vulnerable neighbors, including the elderly and those without reliable heat, is also strongly encouraged.
The extreme cold is expected to ease early next week, but forecasters warn that additional cold-related advisories may be issued as the weekend approaches. Residents should continue to monitor updates and prepare now for another round of severe winter conditions.
