Burlington, Vermont – A mild and breezy January day is unfolding across northwestern Vermont, with temperatures climbing well above normal and gusty winds creating a blustery feel through the afternoon and evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, high temperatures today are expected to reach the mid-30s to near 40 degrees across the Champlain Valley, including Burlington, Winooski, and South Burlington. That warmth is several degrees above typical mid-January averages and comes with mostly cloudy skies and a few spotty shower chances.

South to southwest winds will be a key impact today. Sustained winds of 10 to 15 mph are expected, with gusts reaching between 20 and 30 mph. Locally stronger gusts are possible this evening in the Champlain Valley and along the northern slopes of the Adirondacks, which could make driving more difficult for high-profile vehicles on exposed roadways.

While widespread rainfall is not expected, a few brief showers may move through at times, especially later today and tonight. With temperatures hovering above freezing, precipitation will fall mainly as rain in the valleys. Higher elevations could see a mix at times, though impacts there are expected to be limited.

The combination of mild air and gusty winds may lead to rapidly changing road conditions where brief showers occur, particularly during the evening commute. Loose outdoor items should be secured, and residents should be prepared for choppy conditions on Lake Champlain.

Temperatures are expected to cool gradually overnight as winds remain active, setting the stage for a colder pattern midweek. While today’s warmth may feel welcome, it will be short-lived, with more seasonable January air returning soon.

Residents are encouraged to stay weather-aware, especially if traveling later today or tonight. While no advisories are currently in effect, the gusty winds and mild conditions mark a noticeable change from typical winter weather and could catch some off guard.
