Burlington, Vermont – Drivers across northern Vermont are facing increasingly hazardous travel conditions this afternoon as lake effect snow intensifies, creating slick roads and rapidly changing visibility around Burlington and nearby communities. Periods of moderate to heavy snow are expected to make travel difficult into tonight, especially during the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a band of lake effect snow is impacting much of St. Lawrence County this afternoon and will continue into tonight before shifting south on Tuesday. Snowfall totals of 3 to 6 inches are expected in southern St. Lawrence County, with locally higher amounts possible where snow bands persist. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through Tuesday afternoon.
Roadways including I-89, U.S. Route 2, and local mountain roads are likely to see snow-covered surfaces develop quickly as snowfall rates increase. Visibility may drop suddenly under heavier bands, particularly in open areas and near the lake. Transportation officials urge drivers to slow down, increase following distance, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.
Snow gradually shifts south Tuesday, but hazardous travel remains possible into the morning hours. Motorists are encouraged to check the latest road conditions and monitor updates, as additional advisories may be issued if snow bands intensify or linger longer than expected.
