Burlington, VT – Vermont and northern New York are enduring one last day of extreme summer heat, with temperatures surging into the low to mid-90s across much of the region. The hottest conditions are expected in the St. Lawrence and northern Champlain Valleys, where heat impacts will persist until tonight.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, Burlington could reach 96°F, with Plattsburgh, Montpelier, and Newport not far behind. The extended heat wave has already broken records at several long-running weather sites, with more records expected today before a cooler air mass moves in overnight.
Heat risks are in the “major” category for much of the red-shaded area on the NWS heat map, meaning prolonged exposure without cooling or hydration can be dangerous for anyone outdoors. Residents are urged to limit strenuous activities, seek air conditioning, and check on vulnerable neighbors.
The heat will break tonight as a cold front moves in, bringing more seasonable temperatures to the region by Wednesday.
