Burlington, VT – A significant winter storm continues across Vermont and northern New York today, bringing heavy snow, strong winds, reduced visibility and dangerous travel conditions through 7 p.m. Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Washington, Orleans, Lamoille, Eastern Chittenden and Eastern Franklin counties in Vermont, as well as Southeastern St. Lawrence, Southern Franklin and Western Clinton counties in New York. Snowfall totals are expected to reach 8 to 10 inches in many areas, with 10 to 16 inches possible along northwestern and westerly mountain slopes.

The storm is impacting both the morning and evening commutes. Roads, bridges and overpasses are becoming slick quickly, especially in higher terrain, and blowing snow is reducing visibility in exposed areas. Winds may gust as high as 35 mph in northern New York, increasing the risk of downed tree limbs and isolated power outages.

Additional accumulations of 3 to 8 inches are expected today across Vermont’s higher terrain, while northern New York could see 3 to 5 more inches before the storm exits early tonight.

The NWS urges drivers to slow down, allow extra time, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. Those who must travel should keep extra food, water and a flashlight in case of emergencies. Vermont residents can check road conditions at NewEngland511.org; New York travelers can visit 511ny.org.

Residents should also use caution on sidewalks, stairs and driveways, which may be icy and hazardous during the day.
