BURLINGTON, Vt. – Morning commuters across northern Vermont may encounter wet roads Wednesday as scattered showers linger before a stretch of summer heat settles in by the end of the week.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a 40 percent chance of rain continues through early Wednesday with clouds keeping daytime highs near 69. Showers taper off Wednesday night before skies clear and temperatures rise sharply.

Thursday brings a marked shift, with abundant sunshine and highs near 78 in Burlington and surrounding towns. Friday will be even warmer, topping out in the low 80s across Chittenden, Addison, and Franklin counties. By Saturday, highs could reach the mid-80s under mostly sunny skies, ideal for outdoor plans at Lake Champlain or local fairs.

The unsettled weather returns late Saturday into Sunday with showers and possible thunderstorms developing. Drivers should be alert to slick conditions on rural routes and hikers should be prepared for sudden downpours during afternoon activity.

The dry stretch will hold through most of the weekend, but additional rain chances arrive early next week, keeping conditions variable.
