BURLINGTON, Vt. – Northern Vermont heads into the holiday weekend with a soggy start, as showers and possible thunderstorms are expected Friday before conditions improve in time for Labor Day gatherings.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, rain will move in late tonight and continue into Friday, with the heaviest downpours and possible thunder expected between late morning and midafternoon. Forecasters say rainfall amounts could reach up to a quarter inch, creating slick roads and slowing midday travel across Chittenden, Franklin, and Addison counties.
Winds will also pick up Friday, with gusts reaching 25 mph at times. Commuters are urged to allow extra time on the roads, and those planning outdoor events may need to prepare for sudden downpours. The storm risk tapers off by Friday evening, with skies beginning to clear overnight.
Saturday remains unsettled, with a 40 percent chance of showers in the morning, but conditions improve steadily through the afternoon. By Sunday and Labor Day, sunshine and highs in the upper 70s will return, offering some of the best weather of the extended weekend.
Rain chances fade completely by Sunday night, and forecasters expect dry, warm conditions to hold into early next week.
