BURLINGTON, Vt. – A gray, chilly mid-October day is settling across northern Vermont as gusty north winds and morning fog keep temperatures well below normal for mid-fall. Many areas will struggle to climb past the lower 50s this afternoon, marking one of the coolest stretches so far this season.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, morning fog and low clouds are reducing visibility along portions of Interstate 89 and Route 7, especially near Lake Champlain and across the northern valleys. Winds out of the north will remain brisk through the afternoon, occasionally topping 25 mph and making it feel several degrees cooler.

The NWS reports that highs will range from the upper 40s in the Northeast Kingdom to the mid-50s near Middlebury and Rutland. Conditions should slowly improve later in the day as clouds begin to thin, but another chilly night is expected with lows dipping into the upper 30s. Patchy valley fog could return by early Thursday morning.

Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time during the morning commute and to use low beams when driving through fog. Residents should secure outdoor decorations and dress warmly for evening events as the fall chill settles in for the rest of the week.
