BURLINGTON, Vt. – A crisp and frosty morning is giving way to a brighter, milder fall afternoon across Vermont as temperatures rebound into the upper 50s and 60s under mostly sunny skies. Many areas dipped near or below freezing before sunrise, marking one of the coldest mornings of the season so far.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, clear skies and calm winds overnight allowed for widespread frost in valleys from Middlebury to St. Johnsbury, with some sheltered areas seeing temperatures in the upper 20s. By midday, increasing sunshine is helping warm conditions quickly, creating a pleasant setup for outdoor activities and scenic foliage drives.
Roadways, including I-89 and U.S. 7, are expected to stay dry through the evening, though early commuters may have noticed icy patches on bridges and shaded backroads. Gardeners and homeowners should continue protecting tender plants and outdoor plumbing as another cold night is expected in parts of the Northeast Kingdom.
The NWS says a gradual warming trend will continue into the weekend, with daytime highs near 65°F by Sunday and no rain in sight. The next chance of showers may hold off until early next week.
