Burlington, Vermont – Strong southerly to southwesterly winds are expected to develop across northern Vermont on Friday and continue into the overnight hours, bringing the potential for localized impacts.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, widespread wind gusts between 25 and 45 miles per hour are forecast tonight across much of the region. Localized gusts up to 55 miles per hour are possible in the far northern Adirondacks and along the Route 11 corridor during the afternoon and evening hours.

Forecasters said the strongest winds are expected between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. Friday, when gusts may be strong enough to down tree limbs and cause isolated power outages. Saturated ground conditions could increase the likelihood of trees being uprooted in some locations.

A Wind Advisory is in effect for portions of northern New York, including St. Lawrence, Franklin, and western Clinton counties, where higher gusts are more likely. While Vermont counties are not currently under an advisory, gusty conditions are still expected to impact the Champlain Valley and surrounding areas.

The National Weather Service cautioned that high-profile vehicles, including trucks, vans, and buses, may experience difficult driving conditions, particularly on north-south oriented roads and exposed areas. Drivers are urged to use caution and remain alert for sudden strong gusts.

Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items such as trash cans and holiday decorations and to be mindful of falling branches during the peak wind period.

Winds are expected to gradually weaken later Friday night into early Saturday as the system moves east.

Additional updates will be provided by the National Weather Service as conditions evolve.
