Burlington, Vermont – Strong winds and periods of rain are impacting the Champlain Valley today, creating travel concerns across northern Vermont and nearby northern New York as a Wind Advisory remains in effect.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, south winds will increase through the day with sustained speeds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts reaching 45 to 55 mph. The advisory continues through Friday morning and includes Chittenden, Franklin, and Grand Isle counties, along with adjacent areas of northern New York. The strongest gusts are expected late tonight into early Friday, especially in exposed locations and along Route 11 near Malone, New York. Gusty winds may blow around unsecured objects, knock down tree limbs, and cause isolated power outages.
Rain becomes widespread tonight and may be heavy at times Friday morning, with temperatures falling into the 30s by late day as a cold front moves through. A brief transition to snow is possible Friday night, though any accumulation is expected to be minor. Drivers should be alert for slick spots if temperatures drop quickly after rainfall.
Winds ease heading into the weekend, with colder but quieter conditions expected Saturday. Looking ahead, Christmas Eve on Wednesday is shaping up cold but mostly calm across Burlington and northern Vermont, with dry weather favored at this time. While temperatures remain wintry, no significant hazards are currently expected, though additional advisories could be issued as the holiday approaches.
