Below-normal temperatures are expected to persist across much of Vermont through the remainder of the week, with an increasing risk of dangerous cold returning by the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service Burlington, daytime high temperatures will remain well below seasonal averages, with most locations seeing highs only in the teens and 20s through Friday. Overnight lows are forecast to fall into the single digits, particularly across northern and interior valleys.

Travel conditions along Interstate 89, U.S. Route 2, U.S. Route 7, and VT Route 105 are expected to remain generally dry, but the extended cold will increase the risk of black ice, especially during overnight and early-morning hours. Any residual moisture on roadways may refreeze quickly after sunset.

The National Weather Service notes that colder and potentially dangerous conditions are increasingly likely late Friday through Sunday, as another surge of cold air moves into the region. While specific wind chill values are still being refined, forecasters indicate growing confidence that hazardous cold conditions could develop, particularly for those spending extended time outdoors.

Daytime temperatures may struggle to recover over the weekend, and nighttime lows could dip below zero in some locations, especially in the Northeast Kingdom and higher elevations. These conditions could impact not only travel but also outdoor plans, school activities, and vulnerable populations.

Residents are encouraged to take cold weather precautions, including dressing in layers, limiting time outdoors, and ensuring vehicles are winter-ready. Those traveling overnight or early in the morning should allow extra time and remain alert for icy patches on untreated roads.

The National Weather Service advises staying updated with the latest forecasts and potential cold-related advisories as confidence increases heading into the weekend.
