Burlington, Vermont – Bitter cold conditions are gripping northern Vermont and northern New York Friday, with subzero wind chills during the morning hours and light snow possible tonight across southern Vermont and parts of northern New York.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, temperatures today will remain in the single digits and teens, but gusty winds will make it feel significantly colder. Wind chill values dipped below zero across many locations early Friday, creating potentially dangerous conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors.

Forecasters say a storm system tracking south of the region will bring significant snowfall to areas farther south, including the Capital District of New York and portions of southern New England, beginning later today and continuing into Saturday morning. Northern Vermont and northern New York are expected to remain on the northern edge of the system.

While widespread snowfall is not expected locally, the Weather Service notes that some light snow is possible late today and tonight across southern Vermont and northern New York, particularly near the Vermont–New York border. Accumulations in the Burlington area, if any, are expected to remain minimal.

The storm’s southern track means travel impacts could be substantial just south of the region, prompting forecasters to advise travelers to plan carefully. Those heading south are encouraged to leave before midday Friday or delay travel until Saturday afternoon, when conditions may improve.

Wind chills will remain a concern through the day despite lighter winds later on. Frostbite can occur quickly on exposed skin when wind chills fall below zero.

Residents are urged to dress in layers, limit time outdoors, and check the latest road and weather conditions if traveling. Updates are available through weather.gov/btv as conditions evolve into Saturday morning.
