The National Weather Service in Burlington issued Extreme Cold Warnings and Cold Weather Advisories for much of the state as Arctic air settles in behind a strong cold front. Wind chills plunge between minus 20 and minus 35 degrees, with the coldest conditions expected late Saturday afternoon through early Sunday.
The most severe impacts focus along I-89 from Burlington through Montpelier, I-91 from St. Johnsbury south toward White River Junction, and U.S. 7 through Rutland and Middlebury. Even brief exposure in these conditions can lead to frostbite on exposed skin within minutes.
Communities affected include Burlington, Montpelier, Rutland, St. Johnsbury, Middlebury, Newport, Barre, Randolph, and Springfield. Gusty winds combine with frigid temperatures to sharply increase heat loss, making travel dangerous for anyone stranded outdoors or dealing with vehicle trouble.
Officials warn that the risk of hypothermia rises significantly during this cold snap, especially for vulnerable populations and those without adequate shelter. Drivers are urged to carry winter survival kits, including blankets, extra clothing, food, and a charged phone.
Despite dry weather, road conditions remain hazardous due to extreme cold stiffening vehicle components and reducing tire traction. Diesel vehicles may experience fuel gelling, and batteries can fail quickly in subzero temperatures.
Temperatures begin a slow recovery late Sunday, but wind chills remain well below zero through the morning hours. Officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and check on elderly neighbors and those without reliable heat.
