Burlington, VT – Arctic air has settled across Vermont this morning, bringing bitterly cold temperatures and dangerous wind chills that could reach as low as -25°F, according to the National Weather Service in Burlington.
As of early Friday, actual air temperatures were near to well below 0°F across much of northern and central Vermont. Despite modest warming into the teens and low 20s this afternoon, gusty winds will keep wind chills below 10°F for most of the day.
Forecasters are urging residents to take precautions against the extreme cold, including covering exposed skin, wearing several loose-fitting layers, and ensuring pets have adequate indoor shelter. Frostbite can develop in as little as 30 minutes under these conditions.
The cold stretch is expected to persist into the weekend, with slightly milder air moving in by Sunday. However, temperatures will remain below normal through early next week.
