Burlington, VT – The National Weather Service in Burlington reports bitterly cold conditions across northern Vermont Tuesday morning, with temperatures ranging from near 0°F to –20°F and wind chills well below zero.
The coldest readings were observed in the Northeast Kingdom and higher elevations, where gusty south winds are keeping wind chill values below 10°F in many areas. Forecasters expect temperatures to gradually warm into the upper teens to mid-20s by this afternoon, but biting winds will continue to make it feel much colder.
Residents are urged to take precautions against frostbite and hypothermia by limiting time outdoors, wearing multiple layers, and covering exposed skin. Pet owners should also ensure animals have adequate shelter or are brought inside during the extreme cold.
Conditions are expected to moderate slightly midweek before another potential cold blast later in the week.
