Burlington, Vermont – Widespread snow moves into northern New York and Vermont by late morning Friday, with snowfall rates up to 1.5 inches per hour expected during the evening commute and totals reaching 6 to 11 inches by 10 a.m. Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect from 10 a.m. Friday through 10 a.m. Saturday. Areas under the Winter Storm Warning, including Burlington, Middlebury, and Plattsburgh, could see 6 to 11 inches of accumulation. Advisory areas, including parts of eastern Vermont such as St. Johnsbury, are expected to receive 3 to 7 inches.
Snowfall rates will intensify late this afternoon.
Travel along I-89 from Burlington to Montpelier and along US-7 through Rutland may become hazardous by the evening commute as heavier bands develop. In New York, I-87 and US-9 near Plattsburgh could see rapidly deteriorating road conditions with visibility reduced below one-half mile at times.
Wet, accumulating snow will cover secondary roads first, but major highways may also become snow-packed as rates increase. Gusty winds could compound visibility issues in open areas.
