Burlington, Vt. – Drivers along I-89 and US-7 should prepare for a light coating of snow after 10 p.m. Sunday as colder air settles into northern Vermont, creating slick spots in time for the Monday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a weak cold front will bring temperatures 5 to 10 degrees colder than Saturday, with highs Sunday mainly in the 20s and low 30s. Weak upper-level disturbances are expected to produce very light snow late Sunday night and again late Monday night into early Tuesday.
Snowfall totals tonight are expected to range from a coating to around 1 inch, with the best chance for accumulation across the Champlain Valley and portions of central and northern Vermont. No significant travel impacts are anticipated, but untreated bridges and overpasses along I-89, Route 2 and Route 15 could become slick after midnight as temperatures fall below freezing.
Communities including South Burlington, Colchester and Montpelier may wake up to a light dusting on grassy surfaces and secondary roads. Motorists traveling toward the Northeast Kingdom along I-91 should watch for patchy snow-covered stretches before sunrise Monday.
Residents should allow extra time for the morning commute, reduce speed on untreated roads and monitor local updates. Another round of very light snow is possible late Monday night into early Tuesday, though additional accumulation appears minimal at this time.
