Burlington, Vt. – Residents across Vermont and northern New York should brace for several rounds of showers and thunderstorms Sunday as a slow-moving cold front pushes through the region, raising the risk for isolated severe storms. Heavy rainfall will provide much-needed relief from recent dry conditions, but stronger storms could bring dangerous weather impacts.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, isolated severe storms are most likely across northern New York, where damaging winds, hail, and frequent lightning may develop. The greatest risk runs from Watertown through the Adirondacks into the Champlain Valley.

Travelers along Interstate 87 in New York and Interstate 89 in Vermont should prepare for sudden downpours and reduced visibility during the heaviest storms. Outdoor plans, including late-summer events and hiking across the Green Mountains, could be disrupted by lightning and fast-moving cells.

Emergency managers urge residents to stay weather-aware, avoid open areas during thunderstorms, and be ready to move indoors quickly. Power outages remain a possibility if strong winds knock down trees or power lines.

Showers and storms are expected to diminish late tonight, though unsettled conditions may return early this week. Additional alerts could be issued if stronger storms organize.
