Burlington, VT – Snow on the ground and additional snowfall early Wednesday have set the stage for another White Christmas in Burlington, continuing a recent trend of snowy holidays in northern Vermont.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, the city currently has about 5 inches of snow on the ground, with more snow falling Wednesday morning. That depth meets the National Weather Service definition of a White Christmas, which requires at least one inch of snow on the ground on Christmas morning.
Forecasters say this will mark Burlington’s fourth White Christmas in the past five years, a notable stretch compared to longer-term averages. Historical climate data shows that Burlington experiences a White Christmas roughly 30 out of every 70 years, or about 43 percent of the time, when snow depth exceeds three inches.
The accompanying historical graphic from the National Weather Service highlights how variable Christmas snow cover has been in Burlington dating back to the 1950s, with stretches of frequent White Christmases followed by years with bare ground or only light snowfall.
Snowfall is expected to continue into the morning hours before tapering off later in the day, helping to maintain snow cover through Christmas Day. Temperatures are expected to remain cold enough to preserve existing snowpack across the Champlain Valley.
The snowy conditions are especially relevant for holiday travelers, early-morning commuters, and families planning outdoor Christmas activities, as slick roads and reduced visibility may persist at times.
Residents are advised to allow extra travel time, use caution on snow-covered roads, and monitor local forecasts for any additional updates as the holiday approaches.
