Burlington, VT – A significant orographic snowfall event will unfold from today through Monday evening, bringing locally heavy accumulations to portions of northern New York and northern and central Vermont. Snowfall totals will vary widely, with some communities likely seeing more than 12 inches in the most persistent upslope bands.

According to the National Weather Service Burlington, early morning rain and pockets of freezing drizzle in northeast Vermont will transition to upslope snow showers as colder air arrives. In northern New York, steadier snow begins this morning, with the heaviest bands expected across the Adirondacks—where totals between 6 and 12 inches are forecast, particularly near Old Forge, Cranberry Lake, and the western slopes of the High Peaks.

Vermont’s Green Mountains will also experience prolonged upslope enhancement. Snow totals of 3 to 6 inches are possible along the favored western slopes, including areas near Bolton, Lyndonville, and central mountain towns. Lighter amounts, generally 1 to 3 inches, are expected in lower elevations along the Champlain and Connecticut River Valleys.

Forecasters caution that wind will become breezy throughout the day, leading to blowing snow in exposed higher terrain. As temperatures fall into the 20s tonight, roads may refreeze, creating slick and icy conditions—especially on secondary and untreated roads.

Snow showers will continue through early Monday, tapering gradually by late afternoon. Given the orographic nature of the event, NWS notes that snow totals may vary significantly over short distances and are subject to change as bands shift.

Travelers across northern New York and Vermont should prepare for reduced visibility, snow-covered roads, and rapidly changing conditions today and tonight. Drivers heading into mountain passes should use caution and allow extra travel time.
