Burlington, VT – A messy mix of winter weather is on the way for northern Vermont and northern New York, with a frontal system expected to move through the region Sunday afternoon into Monday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Burlington.
Forecasters say precipitation will begin as snow before transitioning to a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain by Sunday evening, eventually changing to rain overnight. Areas most likely to experience icy conditions include the St. Lawrence Valley and the Adirondacks, where freezing rain could create hazardous travel late Sunday and overnight.
“Precipitation will likely start as snow and switch over to a wintry mix and then rain throughout the day,” the NWS said in its briefing. Temperatures are expected to hover near freezing for much of Sunday, making for slick roads and sidewalks before warming slightly Monday morning.
Residents in Plattsburgh, Burlington, Stowe, and Lake Placid should prepare for changing conditions and potential patches of ice, especially on untreated surfaces. Even minor accumulations of freezing rain could lead to slippery commutes Monday morning.
The NWS advises caution on roadways and recommends staying updated through the weekend as the storm system tracks across the region.
