Burlington, VT — Dangerous cold and strong winds are expected to bring life-threatening wind chills to Burlington Friday night into Saturday, prompting an Extreme Cold Watch.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, wind chills are forecast to fall into the -20° to -40° range Friday night and Saturday morning as cold Arctic air combines with gusty winds across northern Vermont. These conditions pose a high risk for frostbite on exposed skin in a short period of time.

The Extreme Cold Watch is in effect from 7 p.m. Friday until 1 p.m. Saturday for most of Vermont, including the Burlington area, as well as northern New York. Forecasters said winds will gradually decrease and temperatures will rise modestly during the day Saturday, allowing wind chills to improve into the -10° to -20° range, though conditions will remain hazardous.

The National Weather Service warned that frostbite can occur within 10 minutes or less at the coldest wind chill values. Hypothermia is also possible for anyone outdoors for extended periods without proper winter protection.

In addition to the extreme cold, forecasters noted that snow squalls are possible Thursday afternoon and evening, which could briefly reduce visibility and create slick road conditions ahead of the coldest air.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor exposure, wear multiple layers including hats and gloves, and ensure pets are brought indoors. Officials also recommend checking on elderly neighbors and anyone without reliable heat.

The National Weather Service emphasized that preparations should be completed before Friday evening, as conditions will deteriorate quickly after sunset.

Burlington residents should continue monitoring forecast updates, as the Extreme Cold Watch may be upgraded to a warning if confidence increases.
