Burlington, Vt. – Drivers across Vermont are waking up to widespread dense fog Monday morning, creating hazardous travel with visibility reduced to under half a mile in several areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, the fog formed overnight in valleys and along major roadways, including regions that don’t often experience such thick coverage. The agency cautioned motorists to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and allow extra time on morning commutes.

Reports of reduced visibility extend along stretches of Interstate 89, Route 7, and rural roads across Chittenden, Washington, and Addison counties. The fog is expected to lift by mid-morning, though conditions may redevelop during overnight hours this week as cooler nighttime air settles into the valleys.

Travelers are advised to avoid sudden lane changes, maintain greater following distances, and remain alert for stopped vehicles or wildlife along fog-shrouded roads.

The National Weather Service says fog could be a recurring issue over the next few nights, particularly in low-lying and river-adjacent communities.
