BURLINGTON, Vt. – Northern Vermont drivers will need patience this morning as heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms push through the region. Wet pavement along I-89 and Route 7 could create hazardous travel conditions during the Thursday commute, with reduced visibility and ponding on roads.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a soaking rain continues through Thursday with the chance of rumbles of thunder. Southeast winds between 7 and 9 mph will accompany rainfall totals of up to half an inch. The unsettled pattern lingers into Thursday night with a 70 percent chance of additional showers.

Friday offers a transition day. Scattered showers may linger through early afternoon, then skies gradually clear. High temperatures reach the mid-70s before falling into the low 50s Friday night. By Saturday, Vermont residents can expect a welcome shift: mostly sunny skies, light winds, and highs near 72 degrees.

Sunday keeps the pleasant trend going with highs pushing close to 80 degrees under mostly sunny skies. Clear evenings in the mid-50s set the stage for a crisp fall feel. By Monday and Tuesday, temperatures hover near the upper 70s before dropping into the mid-40s at night. That cool dip offers an early reminder that October brings Vermont closer to its first frost season.

Residents planning weekend travel should take advantage of the clear skies and mild temperatures after Thursday’s rain. The National Weather Service notes the next significant weather changes will arrive with cooling nights as October begins.
