Burlington, Vermont – Dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills are expected across much of Vermont and northern New York tonight, prompting a Cold Weather Advisory for areas outside the Champlain Valley.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service in Burlington, wind chills ranging from 20 to 30 degrees below zero could develop beginning 7 p.m. Thursday and persist through 10 a.m. Friday. These conditions are cold enough to cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes, with hypothermia also possible for anyone not properly protected.

The advisory covers all of Vermont and parts of northern New York outside the Champlain Valley, where slightly less severe conditions are expected. Communities along major travel routes such as I-89, I-91, US-2, and Route 7 will experience the harshest apparent temperatures during the overnight and early morning hours.

Forecasters warn that the combination of extremely cold air and light winds will allow temperatures to fall rapidly after sunset. Overnight lows will drop well below zero in many locations, and even short periods outdoors could become dangerous without proper winter gear.

Residents are urged to dress in layers, including hats, gloves, and face coverings if venturing outside. The National Weather Service also recommends limiting time outdoors, ensuring pets are brought inside, and checking on elderly neighbors or anyone without reliable heat.

Drivers should be mindful that extreme cold can lead to vehicle issues, including dead batteries and reduced tire pressure. Those traveling late tonight or early Friday along I-89 and I-91 should be prepared for cold-weather emergencies and keep extra supplies in their vehicles.

While skies are expected to remain mostly dry, the cold itself poses a significant hazard, especially for early-morning commuters, students waiting for buses, and outdoor workers.

Temperatures are expected to slowly recover later Friday, but additional cold mornings remain possible as winter conditions persist.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service at weather.gov/btv for any changes to advisories or timing.
